Choosing Fasteners for Coastal Chennai
Near the sea, plain and zinc plated steel fasteners rust within months. Use SS 316 for exposed and marine parts, hot dip galvanized steel for structures, and avoid mixing metals.
Why the coast is hard on fasteners
Salt carried in sea air settles on metal and, with Chennai's humidity, starts corrosion quickly. Fasteners rust first because coatings wear at threads and edges.

- Hot dip galvanized steel for towers, solar structures and steelwork
- SS 304 for sheltered areas a little away from the sea
What to avoid
Zinc plated fasteners outdoors, SS 202 near the sea, and stainless bolts directly on galvanized or aluminium parts without insulation.
Maintenance
Inspect and wash down exposed fasteners periodically, and replace any that show red rust before they lose strength.
